Dennis Lo Yuk-ming: Pursue the Unknown, Stay Attuned to Life
In his address, Dennis Lo encouraged graduates to pursue lives driven by curiosity, social responsibility and a deep sense of purpose. Drawing on his pioneering work in non-invasive prenatal testing, he reflected on the importance of confronting real-world challenges and connecting personal talent with broader human needs.
“Instead of opting for what will bring immediate rewards, or what seems to promise fame and stability, spend your precious youthful years on explorations that connect your talents with the defining challenges of our time and the well-being of humanity,” he told graduates.
Lo also urged students to stay?attuned to life, emphasizing the importance of observation, interdisciplinary thinking and lived experience in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. “The goal of higher education is not to widen the gaps between individuals, but to close them, or at least to narrow them,”?he concluded,?reminding graduates that higher education should help bridge social divides?through compassion, service and innovation.
Huang?Qifan: Innovation is Forged Through Relentless Trials?
Addressing the graduating class, Huang Qifan described innovation as the defining theme of a rapidly changing era shaped by technological transformation. He emphasized that meaningful innovation requires perseverance, resilience and long-term commitment.
“Innovation is never achieved overnight,” Huang said. “It is forged through repeated trials, setbacks and years — even generations — of dedication.”
Using the metaphor of lime forged through fire and repeated hammering, Huang outlined the stages of innovation, from fundamental scientific breakthroughs to industrial transformation and the development of large-scale innovation ecosystems. He encouraged graduates entering fields ranging from science and entrepreneurship to finance, law, public administration and international organizations to recognize their role in shaping the future.
He also cautioned against pursuing only immediate recognition or easily replicated success. “What truly matters rarely earns you instant applause,”?he said, adding that the most valuable work is often the most difficult, the most long-term and the least immediately rewarded.
Xu Yangsheng: Stand Tall, Stay Grounded
University President Xu Yangsheng congratulated the graduates on completing their studies and encouraged them to move forward into a broader world, equipped with the learning ability, critical thinking, global vision, and cross-cultural communication skills they have developed over four years — along with an open mind, resilience, empathy, and a deeper understanding of both the world and themselves.
Xu warned against settling too early for ease and mediocrity, urging students not to lower their ambitions out of fear,?failure or social pressure. “Life is not only about existence,” he said. “It is about building a life of meaning and purpose — a life you genuinely wish to live every day.”
Quoting German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe — “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do” — Xu reminded graduates that knowledge and aspiration must ultimately be matched by application and action. He encouraged students to embrace uncertainty, learn through experience and remain willing to persevere through challenges in pursuit of their goals.
Student Representative Lin Caiwei:?Find Your Passion, Light the Way?
Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, student representative Lin Caiwei from Diligentia College and the School of Management and Economics reflected on the values she gained during her four years at the University: the courage to explore freely, the resilience shaped through engagement with society, and the determination to pursue meaningful passions.
She noted that resilience is not just about personal growth, but about walking alongside society. Through volunteer work and growing concern for issues such as women’s rights, elderly patient care, and financial inclusion, she came to realize that true resilience must extend to broader social responsibility.
Lin?shared how experiences ranging from forming a student band and creating the graduation song to healthcare-related internships helped her better understand both herself and her social responsibilities. All these experiences inspired her to pursue a future in healthcare innovation at the intersection of finance, artificial intelligence and biomedicine.
