Teaching Strategy of Simulation Experiments Applied in Archaeology

Abstract:

For Archaeology, it involves multi-disciplines. To make the archaeological courses more informative and easily understandable with continuous curiosity and interest, pluralistic interactive teaching modes including the simulation experiments are to be applied to the related courses. Doing simulation experiments is a frontier teaching strategy in archaeology, based on the theory of Chain Operation（操作链）. We conduct experiments of simulating ancient handcrafts by at least two ancient manufacturing techniques in ancient ways, such as ancient major objects: pottery or stoneware, to compare the differences made by different techniques and then to compare them with the unearthed artifacts, by which to inspire learners to study what bring about changes or technological progress and other social topics. To ensure the simulation experiments’ operating in high quality of teaching and learning performance, besides trackable reading assignments and group presentation and discussion in tutorial for learners, trackable game-based test online before experiment and reflective report after experiment are set elaborately. The most creative part, game-based online test for the experiment is based on some video games software applications and is modified with questions to answer and handicraft videos to watch for passing the game in ancient historic scenario.
