Professor Yangsheng Xu, a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang, is the President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Professor Xu is a leading expert in robotics and artificial intelligence. He is Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, International Member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of EU Academy of Sciences, Fellow of International Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. In 14 November 2016, a main-belt asteroid was named 59425 Xu-Yangsheng in recognition of his contributions.

Published in 2018, The Ferryman is a collection of more than 30 essays written by Professor Xu over the years. Most of them were composed and released after he assumed the presidency of CUHK-Shenzhen. Weaving together his insights on education, society, and life, the author presents his experiences in simple yet sincere prose, inviting readers to share in his profound reflections.

Six years after The Ferryman, his new collection Lake at Dusk was officially released in March 2024. The collection brings together 35 of Professor Xu's recent essays, capturing his thoughts and reflections on his daily life. With plain yet evocative prose, the collection invites readers to see the world and draw wisdom from life.
