This April, the University Arts Centre invites Artist-in-Residence No. 32, CAI Liyuan, to bring you Kiki Chats for?“Non-Arts Students”.

In a relaxed and close setting, CAI Liyuan will share stories from her interdisciplinary practice and experiences in international arts and cultural exchange, while also hearing your honest thoughts about art.

Artist-in-Residence: CAI Liyuan

CAI Liyuan currently lives and works in Chengdu city. From 2017 to 2019, she served as a curator and Head of the Exhibition and Academic Department at A4 Art Museum. Since 2020, she has been the Artistic Director of the A4 International Residency Art Center, where she is primarily responsible for international artist residency programs, public and community art festivals, as well as the planning and promotion of various contemporary art exhibitions.

Her current research and practice focus on the localization and intervention strategies of curatorial work, the construction of interdisciplinary networks and resources, and the relationship between public art and processes of urbanization and regional development. She is particularly interested in participatory and community-based art, exploring their local value and implementation within urban spaces.

Over 15 years of practice, she has worked with 335 resident artists from more than 44 countries and regions, organized over 100 project exhibitions, and contributed to numerous large-scale art festivals, receiving various city-level cultural project awards. By establishing long-term collaborations with major international institutions—including the French Cultural Center, Goethe-Institut China, Pro Helvetia, Japan Culture Center, DutchCulture (NL), Res Artis, and TransArtists—she has helped connect global and local artistic networks. These efforts have enabled A4 to develop one of the longest-running and most professional residency programs in China, serving as a vital platform for promoting urban and regional culture and fostering in-depth exchange and dialogue.

【Artist-in-Residence Programme】

In 2016, the University initiated the Artist-in-Residence Programme to create an artistic atmosphere on campus and to elevate student's aesthetic taste. We regularly invite top artists from various fields to reside on campus, create artworks and hold workshops with students. Artists will work with or guide students to create or appreciate artworks through workshops or lectures. Artists will also take into account resources available off campus to contribute towards our development.
