The NSFC has initiated program application for Pilot Group Program of the Research Fund for International Senior Scientists (RFIS-III) 2023. Details of requirements are as follows:

1. Funding fields

Including Frontiers in Mathematics；Frontiers and Applications of Physics；Synthesis of Substances, Methods of Creation and Theoretical Foundations；Fundamentals of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering for Efficient Conversion and Utilization of Energy Resources；?Microbial Diversity, Taxonomy and Phylogeny,?Microbial Physiology, Biochemistry and Metabolism,?Microbial Genetics and Biosynthesis, Microbial-environmental Interactions; Systems Neurobiology, Structure and Function of the Nervous System, Cognitive Neurobiology, Physiological and Medical Psychology; Experimental Geoscience Related to High Temperature and High Pressure; Earth and Planetary Sciences; Inorganic Non-metallic Materials; Mechanical Design and Manufacturing; 6G Wireless Communication System Theory and Technology; Data Construction and Governance Methods for Large-scale Pre-trained Models; Information Systems and Management; Econometrics and Economic Statistics; Basic Research on Improving the Effectiveness of Diagnosis and Treatment of Major Chronic Diseases; Pathogenesis of Major Infectious Diseases and Intervention Strategies; Statistical Physics and Complex Social Systems.

※ Applicants shall select one of the application codes from the comparison table (Please refer Annex 1-Guide) when filling in the research proposal and then select the secondary application code (4 digits).

2. Project duration

Projects are expected to start on January 1, 2024?and end on December 31, 2026?with the duration of three years.

3. Funding amount

The proposed funding level is up to 4.5 million Yuan per project (direct costs). Around 12?research groups are expected to be awarded.

4. Eligibility and Application limit

a. The applicant should:

(1) Have foreign citizenship;

(2) Have a senior academic title;

(3) Make a commitment of working for no less than 9 months each year (calendar year) at the host institution during the implementation of the project;

(4) Establish a research group with at least five members (including the applicant).

b. This pilot program does not count towards the maximum of 2 projects that an applicant with a senior academic title could apply for and run at the same time;

c. Please read the?Annex 1-Guide?carefully for more information.

5. Procedure of application

Online application

Applicants shall fill out application forms online and upload supplementary documents via the application system (?https://isisn.nsfc.gov.cn/pmpweb/login). Please refer?Annex 1?for the application path in the system.

??For applicants who have no application account, please send your name, academic title, School, ID number, email address to?tanyihong@cuhk.edu.cn?by Sep. 15, 2023?to open account.

Paperless submission

In the stage of submission, applicants shall only submit reviewed application forms online, without submitting any hard copies.

6. Additional requirements on application

a. Applicants should complete online application form and proposal in English or in Chinese;

b. Applicant should also submit the following supplementary documents as attachments of the application form：

I. An agreement signed by the applicant and the host institution. The agreement should use the template (Annex 2- Agreement) and be signed by the applicant, after signature, applicant shall submit it to RAO (AB W401) by?Sep. 22, 2022?to apply for the legal representative of the CUHK(SZ) with the official seal;

II. An employment contract signed between the applicant and the CUHK-Shenzhen (if applicable);

??Please refer to Annex 6 for the process of extension of agreement and employment contract.

III.?No more than five representative papers.

c. Any required scientific research reviews, please refer to CUHK-Shenzhen’s research review process of each committee as attached (Annex 3) and send the required materials and forms to each committee’s email address by?Sep. 22, 2023?for assessment. Certificates of ethical or S&T security review shall be upload to application system.

d. Applicant should use the template (Annex4- Research Proposal Outline for PGP RFIS-III_Scientific Departments (A-H)?or?Annex 5-Research Proposal Outline for PGP RFIS-III_Department of Interdisciplinary Sciences (T)) and fill in the main text of the research proposal in accordance with the instructions and requirements.

e. In general, all members of the research group should be from CUHK-Shenzhen, unless if necessary, up to 2 cooperation institutions are allowable for each group.
